What is TPLO Surgery?
TPLO stands for Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy. It’s a surgical procedure used to treat a torn cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) in dogs. The CCL is a vital ligament in the knee that provides stability. When it tears, the knee joint becomes unstable, causing pain and lameness.
How Does TPLO Work?
The Problem: In a normal knee, the CCL prevents the tibia (shinbone) from sliding forward excessively. When the CCL tears, the tibia can slide forward, causing instability and pain.
The Solution:
TPLO addresses this instability by changing the angle of the tibial plateau (the top surface of the tibia).
During surgery, the surgeon makes a cut across the tibia and rotates it to a specific angle.
This effectively levels the tibial plateau, reducing the forces that cause instability and eliminating the need for the CCL to provide stability. The bone is then stabilized with a plate and screws.
Benefits of TPLO:
Excellent long-term results: TPLO is considered the gold standard for treating CCL tears in many cases, offering a high success rate and excellent long-term outcomes.
Faster recovery: Many dogs recover from TPLO surgery more quickly than other surgical options.
Return to normal activity: With proper rehabilitation, most dogs can return to a normal level of activity, including running and jumping.
Risks and Considerations:
Surgery is major:
Like any surgery, TPLO carries inherent risks, such as infection, bleeding, and potential complications.
Cost:
TPLO is a significant investment and can be expensive.
Rehabilitation: Proper rehabilitation is crucial for a successful outcome and involves strict activity restrictions for several weeks.
Is TPLO Right for Your Dog?
The decision to proceed with TPLO should be made in consultation with your veterinarian. Factors that will be considered include:
Your dog’s breed, size, and age
The severity of the CCL tear
Your dog’s overall health
Your lifestyle and expectations
