Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) Scale
The FAS Scale, which stands for Fear, Anxiety, and Stress Scale, is a tool used by our veterinarians to assess and gauge the level of emotional distress experienced by an animal, typically a dog, during certain situations or environments.
Veterinarians use the FAS scale to:
- Assess Emotional State: By observing the behavior and physical cues of an animal, veterinarians can determine the level of fear, anxiety, or stress they are experiencing.
-
Tailor Treatment Plans: Understanding the emotional state of an animal allows veterinarians to tailor treatment plans to address their specific needs. This may involve implementing behavior modification techniques, prescribing medication, or recommending environmental modifications to reduce triggers of fear, anxiety, or stress.
- Monitor Progress: The FAS scale can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of interventions over time. By regularly assessing the animal’s emotional state, veterinarians can track improvements or identify areas where additional support may be needed.
FAS Scale
Low FAS
Level 0: The dog displays relaxed body language and seeks social interaction with team members, without us needing to approach your dog.
Level 1: Shows mild (1 – 2) symptoms of fear, anxiety, or stress less than 4 times in a minute, your dog may still seek social interaction with team members.
Moderate FAS
Level 2: Shows moderate signs of fear, anxiety, or stress, less than 4 times in a minute, your dog may still seek social interaction with our team.
Level 3: Shows moderate signs of fear, anxiety, or stress, more than 4 times in a minute, your dog may still seek social interaction with our team but will often become hesitant to interact with us at this stage.
HIGH FAS
Level 4: Severe signs of fear, anxiety, or stress without aggression, often dogs will refuse treats and avoid contact with staff.
Level 5: Severe signs of fear, anxiety, or stress with aggression.
