What to do when you find a Pet

missing-petsWe often have well meaning people bring pets to us who they found some time ago & decided to keep because they couldn’t find the owner.

The best thing you can do if you find an animal is take them to the vet to be scanned for a microchip (this is free!) or contact the Gold Coast City Council pound (collection is free). The pet may be listed as lost or stolen & will have the best chance of finding their way home if they end up at a vet or pound. This is the best place for them!

Keeping a lost pet without following all steps to locate the owner is theft. It’s gut wrenching losing a pet & not knowing what happened to them. The pain lives with you forever, so please don’t keep animals that could have loving owners desperate to find them. If an owner cannot be found through the Pound & Vet, then adopt, but NOT until it is confirmed that the animal did not have an owner.

Feel free to list the animal on the Lost & Found Pets Facebook pages to notify people the animal is safe & in the pound awaiting collection. Just listing on these pages however is not enough. You must get the animal scanned for a microchip.

It’s also gut wrenching for the well meaning ‘new owner’ to find out down the track that the pet has a microchip and indeed an owner. The animal must be given back to the rightful owner which can cause a lot pain for the family who thought they were doing the right thing by keeping the wandering or lost animal.

It’s also very important that you microchip your pets. It’s only $55 lasts a lifetime!!! Collars & tags can be removed making it impossible to identify your pet & get them back home. It’s especially important at this time of year with the amount of animals escaping due to family & guests leaving gates open & dogs escaping due to fireworks & summer storms.

In short
1. Find a stray animal – take to vet or call pound.
2. Microchip your pets so we can find you. Collars & tags are not enough!!
